Ernie Irvan was a NASCAR driver who had a successful career in the 1990s. He began his career in the mid-1980s, and by the early 1990s, he was driving for the Texaco Havoline Racing team. Irvan had a string of impressive finishes during his time with the team, including 13 top-five finishes in the 1994 season.
However, Irvan's career was nearly cut short in 1994 when he was involved in a serious crash during a practice session at Michigan International Speedway. He suffered critical injuries and was in a coma for several days, but he eventually recovered and returned to racing.
Irvan continued to compete in NASCAR throughout the 1990s, and he had several notable victories, including a win at the Daytona 500 in 1991. He retired from racing in 1999 due to ongoing health concerns related to his 1994 crash.
