commemorative chip for the opening of the Guggenheim Las Vegas.
The Guggenheim Las Vegas was one of two museums opened by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in partnership with The Venetian resort on the Las Vegas Strip in 2001. The museums were conceived as a way to bring high art to the large number of tourists visiting Las Vegas.
Here are some key details about the museums:
Guggenheim Las Vegas: This was a larger, 63,700-square-foot space designed by architect Rem Koolhaas to host large, temporary exhibitions. It opened with "The Art of the Motorcycle" exhibition. Due to disappointing attendance and a lack of funding, this museum closed just 15 months after opening in May 2003.
Guggenheim Hermitage Museum: The second, smaller museum, often called the "Jewel Box," was a partnership with the State Hermitage Museum in Russia. It featured exhibitions of masterpieces from both collections and proved to be more successful than its counterpart. This museum operated until 2008.
