A microphone, whether dynamic or a condenser type, is helpful for any type of air movement that goes beyond the pure sound event. Train, drive, or weather-related wind, but also a simple draught, which occurs when the microphone is turned around, can lead to loud blubbling sounds that ruin sound recording. Even the breath of a speaker close to the microphone can cause "ploping" sounds. The wind shield absorbs wind and ensures that it does not penetrate to the microphone capsule. For outdoor shots, it is best to use a wind protection made of wind protection faux fur that keeps ordinary wind noise away from the microphone.
