This artwork is part of my “NASCAR CHAMPIONS Art Series,” a historically focused collection dedicated to the drivers, machines, and racetracks that defined the early decades of American stock-car racing. Each piece is issued as a Limited Edition of 100 and created entirely by hand. My guiding principle is constant: Authenticity, precision, and historical accuracy in every stroke of my brush. I am Alex Book, an automotive artist and motorsport historian. My work is grounded in archival research and traditional artistic methods. In this series, the racing environment—track surface, spectators, fencing, and surrounding atmosphere—is rendered in ink drawing with watercolor accents, inspired by early graphic engravings. The race car and driver are executed in oil painting, giving weight, presence, and mechanical character to the central figures of the scene. This artwork depicts Lee Petty, the 1954 NASCAR Champion, driving the Chrysler New Yorker entered by Petty Enterprises. The scene is set during the Martinsville 200, held on Sunday, October 17th, 1954, at Martinsville Speedway in Ridgeway, Virginia. At the time, the track was a half-mile dirt oval, tight and unforgiving, demanding precision rather than outright speed. The composition emphasizes a crowd of spectators at the old Martinsville Speedway, capturing the close connection between fans and racing that defined short-track NASCAR in the 1950s.
