This standard covers round chromium-silicon alloy steel spring wire, designed for producing springs that resist setting at moderately high temperatures. It's unsuitable for high cycle fatigue applications. Steel can be ingot or strand cast, produced by any accepted method. The steel must meet specified chemical composition requirements for carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and chromium. Annealed and cold-drawn, or oil-tempered wires must meet specified mechanical properties, including tensile strength. Tests for tension, wrap, and metallurgical requirements, including etched surface testing and decarburization, are detailed.
