Powerful OR systems effectively remove substantial amounts of salt, minerals, and other contaminants from water sources like wells, rivers, and lakes. They employ a popular technology called 'reverse osmosis' to achieve this. Reverse osmosis counteracts the natural process of osmosis, which transports salt through a semipermeable membrane from a low concentration area to a high concentration area. By applying high pressure with a pump on the highly concentrated side of the membrane, only water molecules pass through the membrane's small pores while salts, organics, and other contaminants are rejected. Pure drinking water is then collected on the permeate side of the membrane, while the rejected salts and contaminants are discarded in a brine stream.
