This original waved mortar was designed by Japanese pottery, Yamagata Touen, which has a great history since 1794. The seventh generation, Tomoya Kato, has invented this special functional mortar after 9 years of trials and errors. This waved mortar helps keep ingredients stay on the bottom instead of going up around the mortar which makes it easy and faster to grind. Food can be ground with more freshness due to less heat from rubbing. This Mortar is made in Gifu Japan, which is famous for its pottery products. The pottery products made in this region is called “Mino Ware”. This Mortar is Japanese traditional high-quality Mino Ware. Since the mortar is made of earthenware and is heavy, it is more likely to be damaged by impact than other earthenware products. We use bubble wrap for sturdy packaging, but if it is damaged, please contact us. Mortar is made of clay and fired at a higher temperature (between 1100 and 1300 degrees Celsius). Most of pottery is thick and heavy, so low and dull sound are made when tapping it, it does not allow light to pass through it. It has excellent water absorption and is made in glazed, so it is basically impervious to water. It is excellent in thermal conductivity, which makes it difficult to warm it up but has a capacity hardly getting cold.
