Cork - a Natural Regenerator Grown commercially in a narrow belt that stretches through Portugal, Spain and the South of France, as well as along the North African coast, cork is the outer bark of the evergreen cork oak tree. The bark is stripped from oak trees in the summer months only and the first stripping takes place once the tree is approximately 20 years old. Subsequent stripping’s occur every 9 or 10 years, making cork an ecologically sustainable product as it is one of the few materials that naturally regenerates itself periodically. Care and Use 1) Cork is non-absorbent so any discolouring will only be at surface level. Wipe with a damp cloth in order to remove food particles and light stains. 2) More stubborn deposits can be easily removed by scrubbing with a dish brush. 3) If substantial staining does occur it can be remedied by rubbing the area with a widely-available kitchen abrasive, using a nylon scouring pad.
