Our Lady of Charity is a popular title representing the Virgin Mary in Roman Catholic tradition. She is Cuba's patron saint and is also venerated in the Philippines. According to legend, in the early 17th century, three fishermen got caught in a storm in the Bay of Nipe. After praying to the Virgin Mary for protection, they found a small wooden statue of her floating on a board with the inscription "I am the Virgin of Charity." Surprisingly, though the statue was in water, her clothing was completely dry. After this miraculous event, the statue was placed in a local church in El Cobre where it has been venerated ever since. The statue and story symbolize Mary's powerful role as an intercessor and protector, particularly to those in need. The image emphasizes themes of compassion, love, and care for the poor and needy, all of which are central to the Christian faith.
