Edward Mitchell Bannister (November 2, 1828 – January 9, 1901) was a Tonalist painter. Born in Canada, he spent his adult life in New England, where he was a prominent member of the African American cultural and political communities.
Edward Mitchell Bannister's determination to become a successful artist was largely fueled by an inflammatory article he read in the New York Heraldin 1867, that stated "the African American seems to have an appreciation for art while being manifestly unable to produce it."
