This music was originally published before standard notation (sheet music) was in common use, thus you'll find that the pieces make more sense when approached as though they were tablature, which typically has no fixed time signature. Most of this music makes more sense with a greater latitude of rhythmic freedom than to try to fit it into our modern conceptualization of rhythm. Read more
