“THE STORY OF THE LAST DODO BIRD” is a tale about the last Dodo bird, presented as a narrative told by a fictional Dodo historian character. This book for children is based on Harri Kallio’s award winning book, “Dodo and Mauritius Island, Imaginary encounters” that won the European Publishers’ Award for Photography 2004. Although the Dodos became extinct hundreds of years ago, they continue to live on in the collective memory as stories and mythology, most well known amongst them as an illustrated character in Lewis Caroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” (1865).This story describes the Dodo birds’ once peaceful existence on Mauritius Island, their flightlessness due to a comfortable lifestyle and abundance of snacks, and the unfortunate arrival of humans with invasive animals that led to the decline and extinction of the Dodo population. This narrative emphasizes the importance of environmental conservation and the impact of human intervention on the planet’s biodiversity and underscores the need to protect nature and prevent the extinction of species for future generations. The Dodo landscape photographs in this book were created on Mauritius Island during the years 2001, 2002 and 2004. The credit for these captivating images belongs to Harri Kallio, a Finnish American photographer. Kallio’s involvement goes beyond photography; he designed and built these reconstructions of the Dodo birds based on extensive research in libraries and museums. This book contains photographs of reconstructed Dodos in the real Mauritius Island landscape. Read more
