Product Description Task Force 'supply to the sea' From the Manufacturer The major piece of the modern-day Marines, the air and sea group « Task Force » releases significant forces during regional crises or more serious conflicts. Structured around one or several aircraft carriers, the whole is protected by anti-submarine fighting and anti-air escort vessels and is followed by a squadron convoy loaded with at-sea replenishment. Since the sixties, the French National Marine has made up such groups; the new Clemenceau and Fouch aircrafts carriers were often accompanied by recast escort vessels called Tartar, named after the anti-air system equipping the Kersaints and Dupetit-Thourars to mention but few. As long way from its home port and sometimes in a hostile zone it is thus necessary to replenish the group with fuel, ammunition, spare parts and fresh supplies. This is the role of the supply tankers: the first modern buildings to be equipped for this purpose were La Seine and La Saône. A tricky exercise, replenishment at sea, or RAS, involves the movement of several ships in unison, the tanker is often supported by aircraft carriers on one side and a squadron escort on the other. The fuel is transferred using flexible ducts and the goods are conveyed in transit on suspended pallets by a network of cables. Lastly, an important detail for all sailors aboard these war ships, family mail also arrives on board during such replenishments at sea.
