Out of the 15 newly built A2 locomotives, only , No. 500, came from Doncaster under the command of Edward Thompson when he was a chief mechanical engineer. It was in May 1946 and at the end of the following month, Thompson retired at the age of 65. The remaining 14 locomotives were built under his successor Arthur Peppercorn between July 1946 and September 1947. It was planned to build a total of 25 locomotives, but Peppercorn cancelled the rest by making modifications to the design. His new design became an A2 locomotive and the Thompson's locomotive was marked as A2/3. Locomotive No. 60521 entered the service as No. 521 Watling Street in Gateshead in May 1947 and was discontinued by BR in Tweedmouth in November 1962.
