The Verbal Behavior Curriculum (VBC) is a comprehensive curriculum for teaching learners who present with missing or weak social, language and cognitive competencies and who are at risk of delayed or arrested development. The curriculum is designed to systematically teach the competencies and capacities typically expressed by generative, fully verbal speakers, listeners and problem solvers. The VBC is grounded in Applied, Experimental and Verbal Behavior research of both internal and external origin to the authors of the curriculum. A scope-and-sequence matrix summarizes the progression of lessons that are organized to systematically increase the complexity and comprehensiveness of the verbal/cognitive/social repertoires and competencies being taught. Instructional delivery is systematically evolved from initial 1:1, play-based and teacher-directed programming to normalized large-group and classroom based instructional formats. Written protocols fully describe and detail the tactics and procedures that support movement through the curriculum. The management and delivery of protocols are demonstrated via video examples. To ensure that each learner receives an individualized program, the VBC employs Curriculum Based Assessment (CBA) to pinpoint where a learner should start his or her educational habilitation. The VBC is the result of 20 years of research and applied practice with children presenting with autism and related disorders. However, it is not limited to this diagnostic group and may be applied to address the language development needs of any child.Gladys Williams, Ed. D - Author Read more
