Introduction to the KAT Framework: This Book is written to provide an overview of the transformational KAT Framework. Please note that this is not the textbook and does not contain any of the full lessons and instructional routines.In today’s educational and professional landscape, effective reading comprehension is essential for student success across all subject areas. The Joy of Reading series introduces a powerful, research evidence-based instructional approach to improving reading comprehension through the strategic use of text structures known as the Knowledge Acquisition and Transformation (KAT) Framework. This book is part of a larger series of books, including the textbooks with five separate thematic units of study and a student guidebook for each.The KAT Framework was developed with rigorous research, and this intervention has received the highest rating from What Works Clearinghouse. Its faithful implementation has proven to be transformative, particularly in low socioeconomic schools, where it has achieved an impressive 100% passing rate. The Framework focuses on learning the vocabulary, generating a main idea, extending the main idea to a summary with supporting evidence, and extrapolating inferences with all genres of text (e.g., poetry, narrative, expository) with every reading that is completed in classrooms at all grade levels. These foundational pillars of comprehension are then leveraged for other skills, such as author’s purpose.We created this Framework and the Joy of Reading Series, including this introductory guide, five thematic units of study, and a student workbook, in response to the urgent need in our schools. Our implementation science research has shown that many curricula teach skills in isolation and never show students and teachers how to integrate the essential skills (e.g., main idea and summary) along with other state standards (e.g., author’s purpose). Our research also shows that many curricula present non-evidence-based strategies and do not support children’s mastery of essential skills.SUCCESS rests on instruction that consistently implements our KAT Framework daily with all texts and in all genres and instruction that eliminates the use of contradictory strategies for generating the main idea, summaries, and inferences. By embracing this structured and systematic approach, educators can equip their students with the tools needed to navigate complex texts and enhance their overall academic performance.
