For economy, I put together an eBook edition. I hope everyone can afford it. Thanks to Timothy Slattery for supporting me during my fraught experience. Putting poems into eBook format is a trip.Disney PG. https://help.disneyplus.com/article/disneyplus-en-us-content-ratings“Comical Cadence and Pretty-Near Poems for Humor Consumers and Irony Buffs” (hereafter referred to as “Comical Cadence”) was born in May of 2023 when a poet whom I admire mentioned that she had never been published (in print). The poem is hysterically funny and beautifully crafted. “Island Hopping” by Paula Tohline Calhoun appears in the “Silliness” section.Almost all of the poems in this anthology on the internet, at a site called Allpoetry. This was the first, historical plea I sent out to friends and poets:You need not rhyme, you need not meter.I ain't Paul, nor am I Peter.Nonetheless, you may do either;never mind the nonsensequitur. My little nonsense verse demonstrates the near rhyme—also called slant rhyme or off rhyme—(“either/-quitur”), variations in meter (switching from iambic to trochaic), odd words (“nonsensequitur”) and flouting of logical progression (“I ain't Paul, nor am I Peter”) that I so admire in humorous verse. I invented “nonsensequitur,” but it turns out I was not the first. Some of the poems I have included here are written in free verse. Others follow strict principles of traditional verse to the letter. Yet others include “misspelled” words, jarring bumps in meter, and strange grammar, which turned out to be puns or local variations. Readers, try not to conclude too readily that I or my copy-editor missed a mistake. If you’re sure we did, let me know, and I’ll review it for the next edition. There are a very few naughty poems in “Comical Cadence.” Some are suggestive, but not more so than songs I sang in kindergarten in the early 1950s. A very few demonstrate bathroom humor, which is greatly favored among the little ones. I kept cursing to a minimum. Nothing here violates what I understand as the G rating by Motion Picture Association (MPA), but you know your children; I advise you to read the poetry with them, especially the “Serious Intent Expressed with Levity” category and the “Dark Humor” section. The few political poems in “Comical Cadence” are unabashedly liberal. I didn’t set out to exclude conservative views; it just happened that way. Send me something funny (but not unkind) about liberals for the next edition.“Comical Cadence” includes education regarding traditional poetry forms and meter (not “syllable counting”). If you do not wish to be educated, ignore all categories beginning with: “Poetry Forms.” (Also skip the “Bad Poetry” section and “Poetry Police). If you don’t want to learn anything of value from your nonsense, you may skip “Serious Intent Expressed with Levity” section, but don’t tell me about it!Poetry is usually meant to be read aloud. It’s a kind of verbal music. I have a far-off hope of producing an audio version of “Comical Cadence.” Please let me know if that would be of value to you.My primary purpose in compiling “Comical Cadence” is spreading joy—enhancing camaraderie, mutual admiration, and reciprocal inspiration among my poet friends; a joy I hope to share far and wide.True poetry is written from the hearts and minds of human beings. Writing poetry is as much about the process as it is about the final product. If we use Artificial Intelligence (AI), we miss out on the meaning, emotion, and craft of poetry. To the best of my knowledge, none of the poems in this book were created by any non-human entity. Read more
