This handmade Moche redware funerary mask is very unique. It is not likely that it was molded as no rival is readily accessible for comparison. It is believed to have originated from the Trujillo Valley but can not be substantiated by me due to time between last sale and limited provenance. I find that many estate collections aren't properly cataloged to begin with. "Grandpa traveled a lot after the war and picked up knick-knacks here and there."  But, turns out Grandpa knows his art and antiques and never sold anything he collected!

Amazing pigment remnants that depict scarification or tattooing can be seen under the left eye as well as intact ear spools. Ash and smoke-char from firing is visible en verso. The mask is believed to be a unique representation of a dignitary and is considered a cultural artifact of Peru, ethically collected pre-1960.
