Elephant claw bells, also known as Indian elephant bells, originated in India and were traditionally used to alert people of an elephant's presence, especially in crowded areas, and to help mahouts locate their elephants. . As their name suggests - these were reputedly used on elephants either as a warning to pedestrians in crowded streets or to assist finding domesticated elephants when out grazing.
