This beautiful vintage black lacquer jewelry box is embellished with hardstone and mother of pearl carvings and hand painted gold details. Black lacquer and Asian influence in décor were popular in Victorian times and into the early 20th century. This black lacquer jewelry box is a fine example of this influence.
The realistic and detailed expressions on the women's faces, their postures, and colourful garments speak to the craftsmanship of the maker. (c1879-1926)
The combination of carvings are a sign of good fortune, featuring the jade on the palm tree and her dress, a hint of ivory is introduced as well as the pairing of the iridescence showcased in the mother of pearl.
