The Story Behind the Bobblehead
Decoy's Fame: Decoy (a Dutch Kooikerhondje) first gained worldwide attention when he appeared with Ohtani during the announcement of Ohtani's second American League MVP award in November 2023.
The Name: Ohtani explained that his dog's Japanese name is "Dekopin" (デコピン), which is a term for the act of flicking someone on the forehead. He chose the English name "Decoy" because he anticipated that "Dekopin" might be difficult for English speakers to pronounce.
Giveaway Event: The Dodgers hosted a highly sought-after bobblehead giveaway on August 28, 2024, at Dodger Stadium. The item featured Ohtani holding Decoy. The event was so popular that fans lined up hours in advance to ensure they received one.
A Special Appearance: On the night of the giveaway, Decoy himself made a special appearance and "threw" the ceremonial first pitch, fetching a ball to Ohtani behind home plate, much to the delight of the crowd.
