This is a vintage 1946 vermeil silver Viking ship brooch designed by John Caianiello and listed under U.S. Design Patent Des. 144,480, issued April 23, 1946. John Caianiello is often attributed as a designer for Trifari, working under Alfred Philippe. The sculptural Retro Modern design features a stylized Viking longship with sweeping, arched sails set with clear rhinestones and two vivid sapphire-blue chatons crowning the masts. The brooch is crafted of sterling silver with a rich gold vermeil finish, giving it a warm glow typical of mid-1940s jewelry. Slightly domed for dimension, it is marked STERLING on the reverse. This documented design is illustrated in American Costume Jewelry: Art & Industry, 1935–1950 by Brunialti (Vol. 2, page 167). A beautiful example of mid-century American jewelry design and a rare, patented work by Caianiello.
