"Gap was founded in 1969 by real estate investor Don Fisher and his wife Doris in San Francisco, California. The store's original name was Pants and Discs, but Doris came up with the name "The Gap" as shorthand for the generation gap.
The first Gap store opened in August 1969 near San Francisco State College, selling Levi's jeans and records and tapes. By 1973, Gap had over 25 locations, including one in Voorhees, New Jersey, and began selling private label merchandise in 1974. In 1981, Gap opened its first SuperGap, a store that's nearly double the size of a standard Gap store, in Concord, California."
