The design features a meticulously hand-painted owl in maki-e, with the eyes inlaid with raden (the iridescent inner shell of abalone). Maki-e is a type of decorative painting where pictures, patterns, or characters are drawn with lacquer, and before it dries, metal powders like gold or silver are "sprinkled" to create the design.
The base is made of natural keyaki (Japanese zelkova) wood, and it's a Wajima-nuri style ballpoint pen, which includes undercoating and cloth application with Japanese paper. Everything is finished by hand, and the painting is done with genuine gold, creating a high-class maki-e design. It uses a standard 0.7mm black ink refill from Zebra, which is replaceable. The pen offers a comfortable feel with the smoothness of lacquer that seems to adhere to the hand, and a unique presence.
