Ironstone is a durable, heavy earthenware developed in the early 19th century as a mass-produced alternative to porcelain.
The backstamp features the Royal Coat of Arms, which is a common marking on authentic ironstone pieces.
A.J. Wilkinson was a Staffordshire potter, one of many English manufacturers who produced ironstone for the North American market between the 1840s and 1870s.
Vintage ironstone pieces may be food safe if well preserved without cracks, chips, or extensive crazing of the glaze, which makes the surface porous.
