This is an old, large Burmese lacquered betel box, also known as a Kun-it. It was traditionally used to store areca nut and betel leaves.
This beautiful box is constructed from coiled bamboo slivers and covered in several layers of lacquer, typically in a vibrant red hue. These boxes were essential for storing areca nut, betel leaves, and other condiments for chewing, a traditional social habit in Southeast Asia.
The interior features a fitted tray or compartment designed to hold the various ingredients neatly.
This betel box is in good condition, displaying normal wear consistent with its age and use. It's a wonderful piece of Southeast Asian cultural history, perfect for collectors or as a unique decorative item.
