Beautiful vintage tenmoku (天目) tea bowl used for matcha in formal tea ceremony, made by award-winning artist Hisada Shigeyoshi. The bowl comes with its original signed kiri box, shifuku (silk pouch), and cloth. His signature 「重義」 appears on both the tomobako and the base of the bowl.
Hisada is known for reviving and innovating traditional Song-dynasty Jian (建盞) tenmoku glazes. His works have been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC) and major museums in Japan, and are traded internationally.
Tenmoku ware is famous for its deep black/blue glaze with metallic, shimmering effects created from high-iron glazes. This piece shows the classic glossy, oil-spot surface associated with high-quality tenmoku.
Condition: Excellent. No chips or cracks.
Provenance: Private family collection in Yamagata, Japan.
