The 1858 Flying Eagle penny is a significant coin in U.S. numismatic history. Minted only from 1856 to 1858, it features a flying eagle on the obverse and a wreath on the reverse. Made of 88% copper and 12% nickel, it was smaller than earlier large cents, marking a shift in U.S. coinage. The 1858 issue came in two varieties: large letters and small letters, with the large letters version being slightly more common. Although minted in greater quantities than the rare 1856 version, the 1858 penny is still highly collectible, valued for its design, history, and role in transitioning to the Indian Head cent.
