Here is a cast iron eagle from the mid 19th century. It is a Snowbird and or Snow or Ice Guard. Eagles were placed under the roof slate or shake shingles directly above a doorway or above any other passages which might have pedestrians underneath. They were to catch the ice and snow build up and hold it on the roof to prevent the ice falling and injuring some unfortunate person who might be directly under that portion of the roof.
