Charles Sawyer Vintage A Village Street Signed Hand Colored Gilt Framed NH Photograph

Under glass, large format and in the original gilt frame this photograph is titled "A Village Street" and was created in the early 20th Century by Charles Henry Sawyer.

Sawyer was a New York Tribune artist in the late 1890s, and trained under Wallace Nutting, another pioneer of hand-painted photography. Charles Sawyer's photography became innovative for its black and white and sepia imagery, enhanced by touches of applied color. Sawyer preferred capturing what was right in the moment of a scene, rather than setting up props or people, and he also kept notebooks of descriptive ideas for how to touch up the photos.

Condition: This is an exceptional example of his work due to the full size image and the brilliance of the colors which have not been exposed to sun and moisture, leading to fading and foxing.
