This is a reproduction of traditional Chinese ink and wash painting (shuimohua) depicting two swallows flying over azaleas or rhododendrons.
The inscription says "Autumn of the Ji-mao year" (己卯秋).
The "Republic Period" (1912–1949) was a golden age for this specific style of bird-and-flower painting. The Symbolism: In 1939, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, paintings of swallows (symbolizing the return of spring/peace) and azaleas (symbolizing "burning passion" or "longing for home") often carried a subtle message of hope and national resilience.
Xiang Xianwen was a noted painter from Wuxi, Jiangsu province. He was a member of the China Artists Association and held the title of "National First-Class Artist," a high official ranking for artists in China. Artistic Style: He was primarily known for landscapes (shanshui), but like many masters of his era, he was highly skilled in "Flower and Bird"
