The Group A category touring car races were globally popular in the mid-1980s. The second generation GT-R, which debuted in 1989, was developed with the aim of achieving victory in these races and made a remarkable impact. The second generation GT-R evolved from the BNR32, based on the eighth-generation Skyline, to the BCNR33, based on the ninth-generation Skyline, and then to the BNR34, based on the tenth-generation Skyline. Hot Wheels has taken inspiration from the BCNR33 model. The BCNR33 is based on the ninth-generation Skyline GT-R, which itself had an enlarged wheelbase, width, and length for improved livability. Although the body became larger, the increase in weight was minimized, and through enhanced body rigidity and clever suspension setup, the driving performance was refined. The subsequent tenth-generation Skyline downsized the body again, and as a result, the BCNR33 is preferred over the BNR32 in the United States due to its spacious interior and other features.
