Dune buggies became popular for dune activities in the 1960s on the West Coast of the United States. This later evolved into a category of motorsports. The racing vehicles designed for traversing deserts are collectively referred to as dune buggies. The Meyers Manx is one such vehicle, built on the chassis of a VW Type 1 (the original Beetle), with the dimensions shortened both front and rear, and fitted with a lightweight fiberglass open body. Many similar vehicles were released by various manufacturers, but the Meyers Manx, produced by B. F. Meyers & Co., led by Bruce Meyers and based in California, was distinguished by its high quality. Though designed as a racing vehicle, many young people enjoyed driving the Meyers Manx on public roads. B. F. Meyers & Co. manufactured about 6,000 Meyers Manxes between 1964 and 1971 before going out of business. However, it was revived under different ownership in 2000, and is now also producing EV models.
