This is a vintage Mexican Tonala pottery hen and chicks figurine.

Possibly origin and Art Style: It is a piece of Mexican folk art, likely from Tonala, Jalisco, Mexico, a region renowned for its distinct pottery style (known as santos ware or canelo clay).

The piece was sourced from an estate sale where the former owners spent time in Mexico.

Design Details: The figurine is hand-painted with a speckled or "feathered" pattern in warm earth tones (shades of brown, tan, and white), which is a common characteristic of Tonala ware.

Subject: It depicts a mother hen nesting with six small chicks and five eggs on a scalloped base.

Signatures: The hen has a handwritten name of “A. Fontana”. Some pieces of Tonala pottery are signed by their artists.

Measurements: The plate is 5.5” in diameter. The hen is about 4” in length and approximately 4.6 inches from the base to the head. The small chicks are about 1.5 inches tall, and the eggs are about 0.7” tall.
