Vintage James Meger Etched Glass Stein 6.5in Tall, base 2.5in.
History and Origin
Dual-Country Craftsmanship: This type of "hybrid" construction was common in the mid-to-late 20th century (roughly 1960s–1990s). High-quality glass blanks were often sourced from French glassmakers (like Luminarc or Arcoroc) and then sent to German workshops to be fitted with traditional pewter hardware.
The Design: The lid features a 3D duck-head thumblift and a relief of a flying duck on the dome. The glass itself is etched with a wrap-around scene of ducks in a marsh. This "Wildlife" or "Hunter" series was popular for export to the US and UK markets.
The Purpose of the Lid: Historically, German steins featured pewter lids to keep insects and debris out of the beer, a tradition dating back to hygiene laws enacted during the Bubonic Plague. Modern versions like yours maintain this for aesthetic and traditional value.
