Antique German novelty ceramic dog figurine dating to the early 20th century, circa 1920s. This expressive piece features a bug-eyed dog with an applied fly to the face, a classic example of grotesque and humorous European novelty ceramics of the period. The figurine is hollow with a firing hole to the base, which is typical of early ceramic manufacturing and not intended as a holder or container. Designed as a decorative desk, shelf, or parlor ornament, the exaggerated facial expression and applied insect were meant to serve as a conversation piece.
