VTG Made in Germany Gerz Handgemalt 18 BOAR HUNT Beer Stein Fox Handle Cobalt

For your consideration is this vintage German Beer Stein. The bottom bears in the impressed Simon Peter Gerz I Triangle mark and "MADE IN GERMANY", in addition to stamped in gold "handgemalt / 18" marks. Seller was unable to match these marks to any particular time period, but newspaper advertisements beginning in 1965 began mentioning "Fox Handle Steins" available for sale. Items during this time would have been marked "W Germany" instead of just "Germany", so you decide. The stein features a background of a deep cobalt oxide blue with a sculpted and hand painted image of a wild boar hunt scene with sculpted rings above and below. Below the image is a sculped chevron ring going around the piece. At top and bottom are two peach or gold luster bands. The handle is quite exquisite formed into the shape of a red fox. The stein measures 2.7 inches in diameter at the top, 3.5 inches at the bottom, 7.4 inches, and weighs 1 pound 13.9 ounces. All surfaces are glazed in exception of the foot
