The original "Nine-O-Nine" was a B-17 that completed 140 combat missions, setting a record for the Eighth Air Force for most missions without loss to the crew.
Over 12,000 B-17s were produced for combat during WWII, though only about 40 remain in museums today, with fewer than a dozen in flying condition.
The aircraft in the photo is one of the few remaining airworthy examples, which was operated by the Collings Foundation as part of a nationwide tour to educate the public.
