Prior to the 1930's, the basic coloring book was not widely known - parents selected painting books which called for youngsters to use water colors. Even during the 1930's when crayons were in greater use, books were typically designated for painting or coloring even though there were little difference in them. The Saalfield publishing company took the early lead in that decade with the mickey paint book, the mickey mouse coloring book, as well as the MICKEY AND MINNIE MOUSE COLORING BOOK.
