This photobook, which captures the beauty of women, is characterized by its commentary from the perspective of photographic technique.
Photographer Katsuji Fukuda (1899-1991) consistently took modernist photographs that emphasized composition through light and shadow, and was called the "master of female photography" and "a solitary modernist." He gained popularity at the time with his unique photography column, which discussed "eyes," "nose," "mouth," "hands," "legs," and "full-body poses," along with "partial views and how to photograph them," using numerous example photographs. His popularity surpassed that of his contemporaries, photographers Ihei Kimura and Ken Domon. This book features 100 photographs of women in various poses with accompanying commentary. It is a testament to Fukuda's mastery, as he uses light and shadow to bring out the beauty of women (contours, shapes, volume, etc.), composes them in a balanced way, and allows the reader to savor the essence of beauty extracted from women. However, after the 1970s, due to his aesthetic style, his presence and achievements were almost forgotten amidst the gap with the mainstream of Japanese photographic expression at the time, such as realism and snapshots. But in the current situation of digitalization and diversification, wouldn't it be meaningful to appreciate Fukuda's refined aesthetic sense and the depth of his monochrome printing technique?
