This film portrays the iron will and passion of the man who laid the foundation for the modern aviation world.
A masterpiece of laughter and emotion from the master John Ford!

A biographical film about Frank Wead, who brought air power to the U.S. Navy, became paralyzed from an accident, but recovered with indomitable spirit, and later gained fame for his aircraft carrier battleship strategy in World War II.

Synopsis:
Frank Wead (John Wayne), nicknamed "Spig," is in the Navy. Although he graduated from the Naval Academy, he continued to yearn for the sky and joined the Navy's first aviation class. Persuaded by Carson (Dan Dailey) of the Army, the two took an unauthorized solo flight and crash-landed in the middle of an admiral's tea party.
The two were immediately brought before a court of inquiry, but they managed to escape punishment, and from then on, they became good friends. But around that time, Spig's eldest son, born to his wife Minnie (Maureen O'Hara), died of a fever.
Later, he had two daughters, but Spig's passion for flying continued to grow, and he rarely looked after his family, to the point where his daughters forgot his face. One day, Spig fell down the stairs at home and injured his spine, becoming paralyzed in half his body.
