The 1980 Summer Olympics (22nd Summer Olympics) were held at Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Soviet Union.

This was the first Olympics held in a communist and socialist country after World War II.

This event, held in the Soviet Union as the leading nation among Eastern Bloc countries during the Cold War with Western nations registered with the IOC, reached a point of significant collective boycott. This was prompted by the U.S. proposing a boycott to Western nations in protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979, leading to many countries, including Japan, withdrawing two months before the opening.

The 178 Japanese athletes who had been preparing for the Moscow Olympics for the past four years were left in tears as they had to withdraw just before the event, raising questions about the relationship between "sports and politics."

◎ About Misha the Bear
Misha the bear was the mascot character for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The designer of Misha (Миша) was the children's book author Viktor Chizhikov. During the closing ceremony of the Moscow Olympics, a giant Misha balloon made a memorable appearance, and at the end of the ceremony, it was released into the sky, floating away from the stadium.
