United States, WWI - M1917 27th Infantry Division American Expeditionary Forces Brodie Helmet by the Edward. G. Budd Manufacturing Co. of Philadelphia. The 27th Infantry Division was a unit of the Army National Guard in World War I and was involved in the Somme Offensive, Ypres-Lys and Meuse-Argonne. The shell is constructed out of a bowl shaped pressed and stamped steel base that has been green texture painted. The obverse features the red and black 27th Infantry Divisional insignia–The stars depict the Orion constellation (WWI commander John F. O’Ryan), with “O” to the exterior and a “NYD” (New York Division) monogram to the interior. The exterior edge features a folded over re-enforced rim. The very top has a hammered-on copper rivet and the two sides have steel rivets, all which attach the interior liner. The interior back edge is heat / lot coded: “ZC 37”. Each side has a steel rectangular shaped chin strap loop that has been riveted in place. The liner is lost to time.
