Vintage Japanese 24K Gold and Silver Damascene Earrings

These exquisite vintage screwback earrings showcase the traditional Japanese art of Damascene, featuring intricate inlays of 24K gold and sterling silver on a darkened steel base. The design depicts a harmonious scene of butterflies fluttering among blooming flowers, a classic motif in Japanese nature art. The art of Damascene originated in Damascus, Syria, but was introduced to Japan via the Silk Road, where it was refined by sword-makers who transitioned their skills to jewelry after the ban on carrying samurai swords. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted by chiseling tiny grooves into the metal and hammering fine gold and silver threads into the patterns. The metal is then chemically darkened to create a high-contrast.

The earrings measure approx 1 3/4" long. They are clearly marked "Japan" on the reverse of the screwback mechanisms, signifying their origin as authentic mid-century Shishido or Amita-style craftsmanship.
