Vintage Japanese Wooden Rice Measure

Wonderful, large handmade wooden Japanese rice measure or "itomasu."

Measures 12 inches high with a diameter of 12.5 inches.

Sturdily constructed from wood with double handles and metal bands at the top, bottom and underside. Most likely from the early 1900's - late Meiji, early Taisho era.

Has the shop name stamped into the wood. Other markings might be government seals/ stamps to guarantee accuracy of measurement. This size most likely held 1 masu - equivalent to around 18 L/40 lbs. of rice.

In good vintage condition. Has nicks, scratches, gouges, dust, dirt, minor rust - all associated with use and age.

This piece is so functional - use it to hold a large potted plant, dry flowers, kindling, newspapers, blankets or put it at an entryway to hold scarves, gloves, etc.

Purchased by me when I lived in Japan.
