Lionel S. Precourt and his son Ray began to make household bleach from a 400-square-foot garage in Los Angeles, California, in 1922. The following year, the name Purex (Plutonium Uranium Redox Extraction) was adopted.

Purex Bleach was a major competitor to Clorox Bleach but the brand name is also used for a line of in-wash "fragrance booster" products called Pure Crystals originally launched as an in-wash fabric softner product.

The design and shape of the bleach bottles have changed and in 1931 solid lettering, as seen in this bottle, was added on the neck and shoulder. This bottle is also the original cork-style rubber stopper model used until 1940 when they began making Clorox bottles with threaded necks for screw tops, replacing the rubber stopper cork tops of the earlier bottles.

This quart bottle also experienced various changes in height and width, though it always contained 32 ounces.
