This set is based on the original Lewis Chessman pieces, named after the island where they were found (Lewis, Scotland). The originals date from the 12th century and were carved from walrus ivory. Discovered in 1831 they may constitute some of the few complete, surviving medieval chess sets. The discovery included 78 pieces.

The rook for our version was a recently identified piece to the set (the "berserker"), whose original was sold for £735,000 in July 2019

Original set name:
Lewisbrikkene (Norwegian)
Fir-Tàilisg (Scottish Gaelic)

This beautiful chess set requires a full sized board (the pieces are about 1" in width, varying heights).
This set is best suited for a 12" x 12" board (with 1.5" squares).

Please note: This set is made to order, so please allow a few days for me to make it. Also, if you would like custom colors, just send me a message with your order and the desired colors (numbers from the photo).
