Fontaine falls in love with her neighbor Jourdan, a concert pianist. She follows his career and then they finally meet on the eve of his departure on a concert tour. Jourdan promises to return for her, but that doesn't happen; she marries another man when she discovers that she's pregnant with Jourdan's child.
She meets the pianist some time later, but he doesn't remember her. The story is told in flashbacks as Jourdan reads the letter from Fontaine just before she dies of typhus. The first production company formed by Fontaine and William Dozier. Superb direction by Max Ophuls.
