The North Dakota state quarter is a circulating commemorative coin
issued by the United States Mint in 2006 as part of the 50 State
Quarters Program. The design features a bison in the foreground with a
sunset in the background, representing the state's natural beauty and
abundant wildlife.
The inscriptions "North Dakota" and "1889," the year
that North Dakota became a state, are also included. The reverse of the
coin features the familiar image of George Washington, the first
President of the United States, along with the inscriptions "United
States of America," "Quarter Dollar," and "E Pluribus Unum."
The 50
State Quarters Program was a ten-year initiative by the U.S. Mint to
issue a quarter representing each of the 50 states in the order in which
they ratified the Constitution or were admitted to the Union.
