This book introduces the life and work of Marianne North (1830-1890), a Victorian British botanical artist. After spending a year in Canada, America, and Jamaica, Marianne North traveled around the world for two years, visiting California, Japan, Java, and other places, painting plants from each location.

The intrepid botanical artist Marianne North made an epic series of tours from Britain to North and South America, South Africa, India and Ceylon, South East Asia, Japan and Australasia. The story of these journeys is recounted here in an abridged version of her own memoirs. She wished to make a painted record of the tropical and exotic plants of the world and the result was an astonishing collection of over 800 paintings, now housed in the Marianne North Gallery at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
